He couldn’t help the tingle of satisfaction that washed over his body when he pulled the trigger. The blue blast illuminated the alley in a flash, piercing the darkness like a knife before plunging into the back of his target – a shower of scarlet, a puff of smoke.
The smell of charred skin was foul. His mark stumbled, shambling for a few steps before she fell to her knees. Her body crumpled and fell to the ground with a hard thud.
He edged closer, poking her limp arm with the still-warm barrel of his gun.
“One down, three to go.”
